Check out these highlights from some of the unique offerings patrons enjoyed systemwide February 13–19, 2025.
Elachee Nature Science Center at Hampton Park Library (2/14)

"Gretchen and Jaime from Elachee Nature Center presented a wonderful program about habitats in Georgia. They asked a lot of questions and the kids were very engaged. Jaime walked through the room and showed animal skins, taxidermy animals, and turtle shells as Gretchen discussed the different animals and what they needed to live. They brought a live snake and turtle which everyone got to visit with at the end of the program. We received many compliments about the program and thanks for presenting such an interesting and informative program. We had a mix of elementary and preschool children and they all really enjoyed the presentation." - hosted by Kelly Hollis

Craft with Me at Post Road Library (2/14)

“Today, we had a great turnout for Craft with Me. Two families met up at the event, and the two moms created and conversed, while their kids all sat together and created their artwork. You could tell the moms really enjoyed having a controlled environment for them to share space with their kids but also connect with each other and have a break from their mom duties. One mom attended the event with her two children. She brought her laptop and was planning on doing work and not crafting. When we mentioned that this was a time for people of all ages to craft, she started to slowly participate. She ended up telling us that the more she stopped focusing on her computer and started focusing on her art, the more relaxed she felt. Many of the families commented on how thankful they were that we had a program for them while the kids were out of school, which is a good reminder that breaks are the perfect time to ramp up the activities we do.” - hosted by LoraGrace Paolazzi
A crafting project perfect for children and adults!
Dog Man Bark Party at Cumming Library (2/15)

"The Dog Man Bark Part today was a supa success! For the party, Kaity and I set up 9 different Dog Man themed activities for the kids to do: The Villain Hunt, K-9 Sniff Lab, Pin the Head on Dog Man, Police Hat Making, Dog Man Obstacle Course, Dog Man Trivia, Comic Drawing, Petey the Cat Puppet, and Petey’s Robot Lab. Overall this was a very fun and well received program. A few parents commented that their kids had been very excited for this program and thanked us for holding it. One little boy asked if we could do it again and have more Big Jim activities." - hosted by Signe Madson
Summer VolunTEEN Information Session at Sharon Forks Library (2/15)

"We had a lower turnout than I expected for SF but still a good number of teens. Amy and Leslie came to represent Denmark Library. All of the teens were attentive and a few asked great questions, which I rarely see when they're still part of the audience. Multiple stopped after to ask questions as well." - hosted by Stephani Lindsey
Great Backyard Bird Count at Hampton Park Library (2/15)

"Beverly Adams from the UGA Extension Office presented a great and informative program about backyard birding. She began with a quiz showing different pictures of birds and some recorded bird calls and had the attendees see if they could identify the birds. We have over 800 bird species in our area. She talked about the different ways to identify birds such as size, shape and posture, the beaks and feet, color patterns and field marks, and sounds. The Citizen Science Bird Count is going on right now through February 17 and she gave information to attendees on how to participate. She suggested the Merlin app for recording sounds and identifying the birds as well as the Cornell University website that has a section for All About Birds. With it being a rainy day, we were unable to get outside to actually do any bird identification but everyone still enjoyed the program." - hosted by Kelly Hollis
Therapeutic Camp Storytime at Central Park Recreation Center (Bookmobile) (2/18)

“We had a lovely time at Therapeutic Camp! The attendees were so excited for ‘the library lady’ that they met me at the door, and I could hardly get in because they were all talking at once. We started out by going over some of the celebrations in February. The books we read were in honor of National Make a New Friend Day (2/11), and National Feed the Birds Day (2/3). We learned the sign language for ‘bird’, ‘kindness’, and ‘moon’, and we reviewed the sign for ‘friend’. We learned that the February moon is called the ‘Snow Moon’ because the month of February gets more snow than other months, and that the Cherokee called it the ‘Hungry Moon’. We got the wiggles out by doing a freeze dance to ‘Try Everything’ by Shakira. One of the little girls would make a snorting pig sound every time the music stopped, and she had us laughing so hard that we could barely ‘freeze’! Our craft was a cotton ball snowman, in honor of the February Snow Moon.” - hosted by Jeanine Thompson
