The past two Fridays have been training days for Public Services. Even though we have a Staff Day with training for all staff, each year we have a Youth Services Training Day and an Information Services Training Day. These are full-day training events specially planned for these two unique groups. Here are some of the highlights of these training days.
Youth Services was first with the Youth Service Training Day hosted by Cumming Library. The day started with puppetry training by Reay Maxwell from the Center for Puppetry Arts. Reay educated us on a short history of puppetry and then provided tips on bringing a puppet to life. This training was particularly relevant since our amazing YS Specialists create many puppet shows for our youngest patrons. Sariah Homan (CU) provided drama training that complemented the puppetry training. She encouraged staff to embrace their style but not be afraid to mix it up by trying new techniques. Sariah also showed us how to project our voices which was a fun exercise. Stephanie Green, the Branch Manager at Harris County Public Library, provided training on our reactions to difficult patrons and how to respond effectively.

Sharon Forks Library hosted the Information Services Training Day. Staff began the day with training about intellectual freedom, which showed how FCPL works hard to protect our patrons' freedom to read through our policies and procedures. Brooke West organized an informative Genre Readers' Advisory training utilizing our genre experts: Ross Gericke, Alicia Cavitt, Lorraine Lane, Brittany Mayo, and Melissa Gunter. The day ended with our new Programming Teams meeting for the first time to plan series programming for Black History Month, Women's History Month, Asian American Pacific Islanders Month, America the Beautiful Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month. These Programming Teams did a great job this year, and we cannot wait to see what they come up with for 2023!

Both groups received training on Communico Best Practices by Communications Manager, Leslie Marinelli, and Photography Tips by Cumming YS, Kaity Pittard. Communico is often our patrons' first look at upcoming programs, and Leslie gave staff valuable tips on how to market programs effectively using this platform. Leslie's training was eye-opening for most staff, specifically regarding how their image choice and short description could be distorted or cut off when shared on social media. Leslie had excellent advice on how to avoid that. Kaity provided great information about how to use branch cameras more effectively and even gave some tips on quickly editing pictures to eliminate shadows and brighten colors.
