Check out these highlights from some of the unique offerings patrons enjoyed systemwide May 8–21, 2025.
Bluey™ Storytime Extravaganza at Denmark Library (5/10)
74 children, 76 adults
“Today’s Bluey Storytime Extravaganza was absolutely paw-tastic! For my first story, I read the short story ‘Charades’ from Bluey Five Minute Stories. This one gave me plenty of actions to engage the crowd with, including a segment where everyone danced like ballerinas for a minute! We had two songs, another book, and finished up with a puppet show. Laughter abounding, we transitioned into the finale of our storytime: a meet and greet with Bluey herself!” - hosted by Sarah Grace Moses

Korean Calligraphy and Graphic Design at Cumming Library (5/10)

“Professor Jin Young Lim came to present with her extensive knowledge of Korean history and Graphic Design. Following the presentation, patrons had reusable water-activated calligraphy mats to practice a character Professor Jin had taught them. She went around and spoke with patrons, advising them on how to improve their brush strokes and complimenting their progress. Many were excited to show off their Korean knowledge and spoke about hoping to one day travel there.” - hosted by Isa Caraballo

Homeschool Resource Fair by the Parks and Rec Department at Sawnee (5/13)

“We parked Loanie at the Sawnee Mountain Visitors Center to be a part of their Homeschool Resource Fair. Luckily, Summer Reading Magazines had arrived the day before, so we were able to talk to lots of families about Summer Reading and give them the guide. We also talked a lot about 500 Books and 1KB4K and saw more circulation than expected. A favorite comment was, ‘Wow, look how well our tax dollars are being used!’” - hosted by Brooke West and Sariah Homan

Luckily, Summer Reading Magazines had arrived the day before, so we were able to talk to lots of families about Summer Reading and give them the guide. Bookmobile Visit to Chestatee Elementary (5/17)

“We had a wonderful time at our first stop at Chestatee Elementary! We were there with the Food Pantry and Mobile Medical Facilities, among other community support groups. It was the first time to see a bookmobile for all of the children and adults who were there, and it was evident by the awe on their faces! They would board Loanie and just stand there with their mouths gaping. They could not believe that they could actually check out books from us. We had a lot of checkouts and we got two new cards. It was a great start to our new stop!” - hosted by Brooke West and Jeanine Thompson

Long Stitch Book Binding at Post Road Library (5/17)

“Several patrons commented that this was the perfect item to learn to make for gifts. One patron said she wanted to use hers to make a junk journal, another patron said she was going to use it to press flowers, and another patron said she was going to turn hers into a picture book of her grandchildren. Several patrons in attendance wanted to make a second journal to perfect what they had learned on their first attempt.” - Hosted by Sarah Sander

Maori Culture & Dance at Denmark Library (5/17)

“Kia ora! Today at Denmark we had a Maori Culture and Dance program brought to us from Dawn Mahealani Douglas. Mahealani started with a cultural history of the Maori people of New Zealand. We had many dance and performance demonstrations with audience participation. Our group was a little shy at first, but eventually people warmed up and joined in! Mahealani was very informative and mixed culture and history with hands-on learning and fun. Patrons enjoyed this program very much and many words of praise for Mahealani and the program were given.” - hosted by Callan Berry

“Ken Ostrowski, the Vice President Emeritus of the Atlanta Bonsai Society, spoke to 7 eager attendees about the history, cultivation, and care of Bonsai. He had a few tables with his personal bonsai on display (he cares for over 85 of them). After he went over the history, he described what to look for in choosing a tree and how the different types can be used and their different characteristics. He then presented a slide with tips and tricks on the care and maintenance of bonsai. Afterward, the attendees got a chance to look at Ken's plants up close and ask him questions. One patron has always loved bonsai but was intimidated by it. She appreciated how Ken answered her questions. She said that programs like this allow her to get the information or answers she needs rather than just watching a video. She is already planning on getting started soon.” - hosted by Alison Carling
