Check out these highlights from some of the unique offerings patrons enjoyed systemwide April 3–April 9, 2025.
Michelle’s Magical Poodles at Post Road Library (4/3)

“Today we had two full-house performances by Michelle's Magical Poodles. Michelle's show is an impressive demonstration of her control of her four adorable dogs, three white toy poodles and one "party-color" miniature. They weave through and jump over her legs while she dances, perform classic circus stunts such as pushing a barrel and jumping through hoops, and two even ride on her back as she bends at the waist. There is a particularly cute trick where she pretends to sneeze and one of her dogs fetches a tissue for her. Throughout the show she includes some general information about dog care and facts about poodles specifically.” - hosted by Sara Baggett Preston

Story Writing Basics and Beyond at Cumming Library (4/3)

“The kids were very engaged, raising their hands to answer questions and offer ideas. In order to go beyond story writing basics, we did have to start with the basics of character creation, world building, and plot planning. After brainstorming a bit together on the creation of a cyborg character named Pixel who can speak all languages, we moved onto the techniques that bring your writing alive and help your reader feel enmeshed in the story. Figurative language, sensory language, and imagery brings your writing to the next level. Don't forget a catchy title, a first line that hooks the reader and some chapter ending cliffhangers, and your reader will not be able to put your story down! I gave everyone a handout featuring many Three Word Challenges and they got busy writing. A few kids chose to share their writing. Parents were very complimentary and thanked me for the program. Several parents told me they felt the content of the program and the presentation of the material was very good. They would like to see more programs about writing geared toward this age group.” - hosted by Holly Raus

Teen Cookie Decorating Challenge at Sharon Forks Library (4/3)

“This program was a big hit! We had double the teens we expected. Each teen got to decorate one sugar cookie with icing, sprinkles, chocolate chips, and more! We had three categories: Bookish cookie, Creative cookie, and Prettiest cookie. Our VolunTEENs acted as judges. Each winner got a small button that looked like a cookie with sprinkles. They were all really enthusiastic and competitive with their decorating. This went beyond expectations, and I highly recommend a similar program for teens!” - hosted by Stephani Lindsey

Birds of Prey at Hampton Park Library (4/4)

“There were quite a few bird enthusiasts at our program today. Kathy, from Smithgall Woods, is an excellent and engaging presenter. She showed different bird beaks and talked about how each one functioned. She used a lot of questions to engage the kids. She showed different bird wings and demonstrated how they work and the birds that were associated with them. Families really enjoyed the program and several told me how much they learned today.” - hosted by Kelly Hollis

Touch a Truck at Fowler Park (4/4)

“We had a wonderful turnout of trucks, including FCFD Firetruck, FCPL Bookmobile, Sawnee EMC Power Truck, horse/goats carrier from Wilde Wood Farm, Verizon Disaster Trucks, Shipley Do-Nuts Donut Car with Donut Mascot, FC School Bus, Red Oak Pink Truck, two tow trucks from Potts Towing, the production truck from Custom Media Solutions, a Fiat and mascot from Ecomaids, and Patrol Cars from CPD and two CHIPS vehicles, five vehicles from FCPD. All of the planning and organizing for this definitely paid off when making sure that all of the trucks got to where they needed to be and ready for the patrons. I was very excited to see that several of our truck providers brought goodies for the kids such as little fire helmets, stickers, and even fruit. We saw many of our Post Road regulars, and everyone we talked to was very complimentary of the event.” - hosted by Jaime Adams

“We had Ms.Gretchen and Ms.Leanne from the Elachee Nature Center present the program about animal habitats to our patrons. The presenters had a wide variety of visual representation of the animals (fox, star fish, owl, and much more). They put together a "touch table" with displays that the patrons could touch and feel the animal skin at the end of the program, and they also brought a live turtle and snake for the children to touch and feel after the end of their presentation. During the presentation, they presented the details of animal habitats, the decomposers, the cycle of life, and what each animal eats and how the animals behave. The presenters were very well informed and patiently answered all the questions. Patrons loved the program and went home happy, and we heard many patrons say how much fun they had in this program.” - hosted by Anuradha Murari
