Incident at Sharon Forks Library

On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, a group of teens were involved in an incident in the Teen Room at Sharon Forks Library involving two BB guns designed to look like handguns. Staff was notified by a concerned parent of a child who observed the incident, and administration was contacted. After a brief discussion, it was determined the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office needed to be involved.

Security camera footage revealed a group of ten students passing around the guns, pointing them at each other, and pulling the triggers of the unloaded guns. While it was apparent the group were all friends and not intending to harm one another, the behavior was disturbing, made other patrons and staff uncomfortable, and directly violated FCPL patron behavior policy.

Continued investigation led to the identification of several involved parties, including the three main instigators. The Sheriff’s Office visited each of the teens' homes and made their parents aware of the incident and the serious consequences that could have resulted from the situation. As a result, the three main instigators were issued criminal trespass citations and are not allowed on any Forsyth County Public Library property until further notice.

FCPL Administration is issuing letters to students and their parents informing them of the library ban, which will be in effect for six months. Branch Managers will share photos and names of the banned patrons so staff can identify them. These patrons are not considered dangerous. If you see them in your library, notify your supervisor immediately.
