Library Board Meeting Update (03/20/23)

Submitted by Lindsey Allison

Monday night, the Board met at the Cumming Library. Highlighted agenda items include:

Strategic Planning discussion:

The Board members briefly discussed the outcome of the Strategic Planning Retreat. They were pleased with the participation of community members and local leaders and the positive comments that many participants made about FCPL and its staff. Kristin Morrissey pointed out that her favorite comment of the day was that the Library makes it easier to raise a family.

Denmark Library update:

The budget shortfall for the Denmark Library was discussed during the meeting. However, yesterday evening we learned $2.4M for the Denmark Library has been included in the Senate's budget. This is not a final appropriation, as it needs to survive the reconciliation process. Once Governor Kemp signs the budget, the funds will be available.

Uncollectable patron debt:

The Board approved writing off over $40,000 in patron debt from 2019.

Proposed use of fund balance:

The Board approved the Library’s request to use $60,000 in the fund balance to purchase a replacement courier vehicle/box truck. Because of supply chain and inventory issues, the Library requested an estimated amount to be able to move on a purchase quickly once a vehicle is found.

Proposed FY2023 budget adjustments:

There were three budget adjustments approved at Monday’s meeting. The first adjustment reflected the Sandra Deal Summer Reading Grant from GPLS. The second adjustment reflected the grant from the Rotary Club of Forsyth County for summer reading books and prizes. The third was a donation from the Friends and Advocates to cover the cost of food for the Strategic Planning Retreat.
