Newspaper Digitization Update

Submitted by Jeff Fisher

The Library has partnered with the Digital Library of Georgia over the last 6 years to digitize past issues of the Forsyth County News, the local newspaper of record. Permission to digitize these issues was given by the publisher of the Forsyth County News.

Fiscal year 2023 saw the completion of this project, for now, with the digitization of issues from January 2013 through the end of December 2019. This round of digitization saw 1,117 issues of the newspaper scanned and made available electronically, accounting for over 21,000 pages.

The project in total has seen issues from 1916 through 2019 digitized. This includes 8,369 issues, and over 184,000 pages. The issues were scanned from microfilm holdings. The first years of the project used microfilm of the newspaper that was held by the University of Georgia. The last two years of the project involved microfilm of recent years produced for the Library by Advantage Archives in Iowa. Advantage Archives provided FCPL with permission to scan and digitize these rolls of microfilm.

The digitized issues of the Forsyth County News are available in the Georgia Historic Newspapers online database. A direct link to the issues of the Forsyth County News is available here.

Please note that in all lists on the Georgia Historic Newspapers database, the newspaper is listed under 'T' for the, as opposed to 'F' for Forsyth.
