Check out these highlights from some of the unique offerings patrons enjoyed systemwide November 14–November 20.
Hands on History at Cumming Library
“Hands-On History: Civil War had an amazing turnout today! As people entered, Zac the IS played period fiddle tunes for us. Our reenactor sat at his table, reading a newspaper. After I welcomed everyone, I banged on a bucket and the presenter jumped, and explained he was mostly deaf because he was an artillery man. He talked about his role in the war, and showed some of the gear he had spread out on the table. Patrons had lots of wonderful, interesting questions! We truly had all ages in attendance. A very popular field hospital station was also set up in the back, with beds, blankets, bandages, medical supplies, and puppets to doctor. Kids loved getting to be nurses to the puppets.” - hosted by Kaitlyn Bowers
Game Night for Teens and Tweens at Hampton Park Library
“Our Teen Game Night was a huge hit! Since this was a program planned and promoted by TAB, I had some volunteers from the group help with setup and tear-down today. They did a fantastic job with this and also did well making a few last-minute decisions together as a group. During the program, teens had a blast playing an array of exciting games. We had the Nintendo Switch available (which was very popular) as well as many giant games and board games. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many teens expressing how much they enjoyed the evening. I’m so proud of this semester's TAB group for their hard work in planning and presenting such a fun and memorable program! This program's activities promoted critical thinking, conflict resolution, and memory, logic and reasoning skills. Teens were able to de-stress in a positive way and socialize in a safe environment. Teens participated in activities with peers that promoted the development of social skills.” - hosted by Chase Truran
MakerDay: Macrame Leaf at Post Road Library
“I gave the participants a little info on the history of macrame and told them that there were various ways to make this particular design. I did let them all know that I was going to teach them how to do a very basic square knot for this project. I gave them all printed instructions on the process from start to finish and I did a demonstration on the projector screen so they could follow along if they needed. The group was a mixture of new and returning crafters. They seemed to enjoy the project and looked forward to the other ones coming up.” - hosted by Alison Carling
Handcrafted at Hampton Park Library
“Today we worked on a felt leaf wreath decoration. Each crafter took care in choosing coordinating colors of felt to use for the wreath's leaves. They traced the leaf pattern on the felt and cut out groups of leaves. Once the leaves were cut, they could use hot glue to attach floral wire to the leaves and then attach them to the wire wreath frame. Each crafter was happy with the colors they picked out. Everyone enjoyed working on this project and sharing Thanksgiving plans and stories.” - hosted by Amy Whitten
Hooked on Books at Hampton Park Library
"We all really enjoyed discussing The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. This very popular novel makes a great book club book since it introduces so many relevant life topics. This story easily lends itself to thinking about life choices and consequences, so we had a lot to talk about at our meeting." - hosted by Amy Whitten
