Collection Development Librarian Kim and I, with the help of our amazing Facilities Department team, will be reducing the Hampton Park Library's adult nonfiction collection by about 34% over the next year.
The goal of the project is to swap where adult fiction lives with the shelving currently housing adult nonfiction.
Patrons just don't use libraries for in-depth research as they once did. By reducing the amount of reference type materials and focusing on core popular topics, we can provide a better utilized collection for our patrons, giving them more titles of the topics they desire, whether adult fiction, adult nonfiction, or adult graphic novels.
Hampton Park Library's adult fiction collection circulation has increased 7% from FY2015–FY2025. There have been 6,723 unique adult fiction titles checked out in the first half of FY2026, 72.8% of the collection!
Hampton Park Library's adult nonfiction collection circulation has decreased 16% from FY2015–FY2025. There have been 4,326 unique adult nonfiction titles checked out in the first half of FY2026, 33.8% of the collection. This excludes adult language learning items. Only 59 unique language learning items (14.6%) checked out from the adult nonfiction collection in the first half of FY2026.
We hope to have the adult nonfiction weeding done by October 2026 and the collections moved by the end of 2026.
