Earlier this month, Hampton Park Library had a surprise visitor (not a turkey this time!). We found a luna moth near the loading dock.
It was still there the next day, and since luna moths only live for a few days (fun fact: they don't have mouths or digestive systems), I collected the moth and gathered supplies to pin it.
Luna moths are considered symbols of transformation, and Hampton Park has been going through one recently. From new staff to a plethora of new patrons, the sleepy branch that could is now growing into a busy hub of activity. It has been incredibly exciting to witness, and it seems nature agrees. Now pinned, the luna moth resides in our break room as a reminder of our growth and change.
But don’t just take my word for it. Within a week, we found ANOTHER
luna moth on the back doors of the library. It was obviously after some
late night reading materials.
Inspired by these beautiful moths, Hampton Park’s newest addition Britt
Poteet, who is having her own year of transformation, designed her
Renaissance Faire costume after one.
Turning 16 is often a pivotal year in many cultures, so it comes as no
surprise that it is a pivotal year for Hampton Park. We’re glad the luna
moths seem to agree.
I live near HP and found a luna moth in my yard about a month ago. It was such a surreal treat! I'm glad you were able to take photos to document it!
