Materials Department Vega Discover Issues

Thank you for gracefully helping patrons adjust to these monumental catalog changes.

The Materials team is currently addressing several challenges. We love Discover’s new roll-up and advanced search features.

Please submit a cataloging problem form if you find roll-up errors. This cleanup will be ongoing as we all discover items that need correction.

We are fixing eBook and eAudiobook roll-up and formatting errors. We also asked Vega to standardize format names in advanced search.

We are systematically separating abridged juvenile classics from adult originals (e.g., The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes).

“ON-ORDER” items are purchased but not yet received. Once received, the status changes to “on order” while in the Materials Department. (Please note that while you may see on order items in Leap, they won’t appear in Discover until the nightly sync.) During cataloging, we replace the preliminary record with the official one, causing the title to temporarily disappear from the catalog and patron lists. Please reassure concerned patrons that the item is still in our system (visible in Leap) and will reappear in Discover after the nightly sync.

The new advanced search features are really wonderful. Our Collection Development team goes above most library systems in determining appropriate collection levels for our books. Most library systems do not have separate Teen Middle and Teen High collections. Publishers often use a wider age range classification than we do. A book could be recommended for ages 9-12, but we carefully review titles to determine if a book should be placed in the Juvenile or Teen Middle collections. We do not suggest searching by age. Rather, please search for collections. Our Early Readers and Easy collections are suggested for grades pre-K–first grade. The Early Readers are more focused on books the children read by themselves. Our Juvenile collections are recommended for second–fifth grades. Our Teen Middle collections are recommended for children in grades 6–8, and the Teen High collections are recommended for grades 9–12. Students can skip grades or repeat grades. Thus age is not always an appropriate search factor.

Please note that Read-Alongs have a searchable format of “nonmusical sound recording”. We have asked Vega to change this to “Read-Along” but it may not be possible. We are working on changing the few Language Learning audiobook-only titles under “Audio Book on CD” to the “Audio Books” format.
