The new Unbound service is active within the online catalog. Unbound replaces NovelistSelect, which was a similar service once embedded in the online catalog. This blog entry is the first in a series that will highlight some of the features of Unbound.
Unbound provides many features that patrons will find useful in making materials selections for themselves and their families. One feature that readers of series will find helpful is the 'Series' feature.
The Series feature within Unbound will display images of all the titles in a particular series. The titles in a series that are owned by the Library will display in color. Titles in a series that are not owned by the Library will display in a gray tone.
The image above shows the items in the popular science fiction series Red Rising. The first title in the series, Red Rising, is highlighted in blue because this is the Unbound entry in the online catalog for that specific title. Note that the remaining titles are all displaying in color, indicating that the titles are owned by the Library. After the six titles in the regular series, also note the presence of a title in a graphic novel spin off series.
The image below provides an example of a series for which the Library does not own all titles. Titles unowned by the Library are displaying in gray. The image is that of the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. Please remember that items in series are often no longer available for purchase, or else no longer have the demand to warrant inclusion in the collection. Space is also a factor with extensive series. Some series titles are perfect candidates for Interlibrary Loan requests.
I just used the "Series" feature last night while in the catalog looking up a book for my daughter who was asking for the next in the series. Such a helpful feature!
