The Power of Purposeful Reading Practice Week: Strategies for Elevating Purposeful Reading Practice in Tier 1 (edWeb)

Students today have greater access to text than at any point in human history. Yet data consistently shows that many K–12 students are reading less than ever. What lies behind this troubling trend? And what can we do to address it? While the answers to both questions are multifaceted, the first step lies in strengthening daily practice to ensure students can make the most of every minute spent on reading. View this edWebinar to explore strategies that schools and districts can incorporate into whole group instruction to better engage students in purposeful, high-impact practice.

The Safe Librarian: Feeling Safe and Being Safe at Work (GPLS Niche Academy)

It’s hard to concentrate on your work in the library if you don’t feel physically, mentally, and emotionally safe. Library staff can feel miserable, demotivated, and disillusioned when confronted with patrons who have untreated mental health issues, who struggle with substance use, or who have a sense of entitlement that the library rules don’t apply to them. As most are aware, there has been a lot of talk recently about library staff quitting or leaving their jobs or even leaving the profession because of daily discomfort or fears for their safety. A job in the library dealing with the public requires being service-oriented, but also assertive; being helpful, but also with reasonable personal boundaries; and being thoughtful and aware, but safe and protected when confronted by patrons who are disruptive, disrespectful, and even moving toward dangerousness. It is demanding work. Librarians and staff have the right to a safe work environment, and creating that safe workspace is a collective effort. This webinar is for both the library leader who is looking to understand how to re-orient their library culture around a safe and secure environment, and for the librarian or staff member who wants to ensure their own personal physical, mental, and emotional safety in their library.

Staying Positive in the Face of Negativity (LinkedIn Learning)

Even the most optimistic of us can get weighed down when seemingly unrelenting negativity swirls around us at work and in life. It impacts our perspective, presence, and performance. Self-leadership expert Scott Mautz teaches a specific plan for fostering sustainable positivity, especially in the face of tiresome negativity. You’ll be able to stay positive over the long haul by applying fundamentals of positivity—like staying grounded and practicing a special type of gratitude—and by drawing optimism from increased mental strength. Learn to build specialized positivity skills—such as handling criticism and difficult people—and build daily habits of positivity too. Plus, hear real-world examples and craft a personal MAP (micro action plan) for being realistic but staying upbeat when it feels like the world is conspiring to keep you down.
