Outreach Golden Hour Visit to Cumming Health and Rehab
“‘The Magic of Musical Instruments’ is the title of our July senior program and it has been very well received. This program will be presented at thirteen different senior centers in July, including nursing homes and memory care centers. The residents have enjoyed talking about musical instruments and learning about unusual instruments from around the world. During the program we played a game where they had to guess the musical instrument. The residents have been having so much fun with this portion of the program. My favorite part of the program is when I give the residents some percussion instruments and play Elvis' ‘Jailhouse Rock.’ Everyone starts moving, singing, and playing the instruments to the music. I am touched as I watch the residents' faces light up as they tap, beat and strike the various instruments to the beat. Watching this moment proves that there really is magic in music.” –contributed by Kandy de Martin

Around the World Wednesdays at Post Road Library
“Around the World Wednesday landed in America today with patriotic music playing in the background! We learned about the bald eagle with a live cam from Big Bear Valley in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. I created a bald eagle out of butcher paper and put it on the wall for kids to stand in front of to see how big its wingspan is, which is 80 inches! I made the Statue of Liberty's nose and put it on the wall, encouraging the kids to stand next to it too so they could understand how large the monument is in person (four feet and six inches)! I created a baseball field out of paper and put together a game with a die and little teddy bears as the players, which the kids loved. For the main event, we built a Mars Rover out of cardboard. At first we had some difficulty getting the rovers to move across the floor, but we made some changes and the kids were thrilled when they moved! So were we! We did not travel far at all; however we had a blast.” –hosted by Tina Pearson

Understanding America: Elections Forecasting at Sharon Forks Library
"Dr. Eric Wilk opened the lecture up by discussing what factors influence voters in Presidential elections. Party identification is the leading factor, with ideology/policy preferences following behind with less than half of voters taking it into consideration. The economy is the number one driving force in how Americans vote and which party they lean towards. Dr. Wilk explained that only 60% of Americans vote in Presidential elections today, which is actually an increase compared to recent decades. Dr. Wilk used data collected from Gallup's Presidential Job Approval Center Dr. and RealClearPolitics.com. He recommended the book The Myth of the Independent Voter by Bruce E. Keith, which he said does a great job of explaining Independent voters and who they tend to vote for. A post-program survey showed that attendees consistently found the information helpful and interesting, and that they feel more confident about the topic. Most said they like adult programs in the afternoon on the weekends, and that they enjoy the audience's involvement in the program. One patron explained that she was from Fulton County and wished Fulton offered programs like this. She is thankful we allow non-cardholders to attend events and was intrigued by our partnership with UNG and the other adult programs we offer.” –hosted by Jessica Dillard
Survive the Night: A Wilderness Escape Room at Cumming Library
“Patrons attended all four sessions to solve the mystery of the missing Ranger London! After searching his last known whereabouts (the ‘ranger station’/meeting room) they found clues throughout the room, including map pieces in locked boxes, radio codes, an abundance of books, and many red herrings. Once patrons pieced clues together, they bundled up and prepared to make the treacherous journey to Camp Klondike. Unfortunately, the journey proved too long, so patrons camped for the evening at an abandoned campsite where they had to build a fire and figure out where Jack went next. During the program, one patron took pictures on her phone saying, ‘I'm having so much fun’ with such a big smile on her face. A patron called later in the day and told us that she had such a great time and that she really enjoys all of the programs we do (she's one of our regular crafters). This program would not have been possible without the help of five amazing VolunTEENs who reset the rooms in between and took great pictures of our survivors, and the staff who held down the fort for us during the sessions!” –hosted by Brianna Schantz and Melissa Gunter

Big Time Groove: Adventures in Rhythm and Rhyme at Hampton Park Library
"Dave with Beatin' Path Rhythm got everyone warmed up with clapping and tapping to different rhythms. He shared the story, ‘Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain : a Nandi tale,’ enlisting volunteers to be the drummers in the story while the rest of the group helped act it out. Everyone really enjoyed playing their part. He then shared a story he wrote entitled ‘Itsy Bitsy Blues.’ He used cymbals and had the audience join in with different sounds and beats as he rapped/chanted the words of the book. It was so fun seeing even the littlest of patrons bounce and dance along to the rhythms. Dave handed out family percussion sets that included different sized drums and maracas so attendees could create their own drum circle and have fun following along to the different rhythms. Several families came up to thank me for having Dave visit our library and, based on the smiles and participation, everyone had a great time.” –hosted by LeAnne Craig
