Summer Fun at Cumming Library

CU was inspired by Post Road’s wonderful article about all of their summer décor and fun. Cumming has heard amazing things about all the other branches as well. We wanted to throw out a challenge to Sharon Forks and Hampton Park to make a blog post about all of their fabulous summer décor. 

In the spirit of the challenge we will attempt to show you what Cumming decided to come up with.

We also used a passport and travel theme. We wanted our patrons to have the adventure of traveling the globe while staying in the confines of the library. At Cumming we love to incorporate staff pictures in our displays. I think it allows our patrons to get to know our faces and makes our littlest patrons more comfortable.

As soon as patrons enter the library they are invited to join us on a hot air balloon journey in our lobby. Staff put the balloon on a rolling board so it can travel around the library.

When patrons enter our children’s area they are greeted with multiple displays all at once.

First, patrons will travel to Africa and go on a Safari.  Our Alexa created this eye popping display on our ginormous easy wall. I love how the letters are in animal print.

Next we will take you to the jungles of the Amazon. Patrons are asked to go on a scavenger hunt to find all of the camouflaged animals in the jungle. If you have a second you may want to take a look and see how many you can find.

Melissa thought we needed a way to travel so she turned the Ask Us desk into a pirate ship. Complete with sharks and a plank for the little patrons to walk.

As you turn towards the Friends bookstore a stunning Great Barrier Reef creeps up over the easy shelves, as you walk closer you discover more and more delightful coral and sea creatures. Please notice Scuba Bruce who has volunteered for the library for over thirty years.

Next patrons travel across Asia and into Europe where they discover great works of “Librarian Art” at the Louvre. Moving from right to left from the top: “Supervisor with lost little patron”, “The Bibliorina”, “Mona Leeson”, “Reference Girl”, and “CSA with milk jug in storytime”. On bottom: “The Girl with the 553.8 Earring”, “John the Noble CSA”, “Library Gothic”, and “Issac Vanshelfer.”  Shout out to Kaity for photoshopping all of the staff faces into famous works of art. For some extra fun see if you can name any of the staff faces in the paintings.

Holly created an interactive wall; featuring herself and her dog Freddie hiking Mount Everest. Along the way you can discover cool facts about Mount Everest.

 

Signe, the newest of our YS team, created our Antarctica display featuring adorable walruses and penguins.

Th The IS team decorated to take our patrons to different locales on each endcap.
