Check out these highlights from some of the many wonderful programs that patrons attended systemwide between September 11–September 18.
Post Road Writers’ Group at Post Road Library
“We had a great meeting tonight with three of our regulars (two middle grade submissions) and a new writer attending for the first time. All five of us offered feedback. One of the manuscripts is at the midpoint and is an action pact investigation that compares to Nancy Drew and Johnny Quest cartoons, with the main character being a teenage boy. The other manuscript is a time travel story packed with a lot of action and interesting historical references. Both writers are very talented and I believe will have their manuscripts ready to query agents and editors soon. Once we were done critiquing we talked about the North Georgia Book Festival happening this weekend in Dahlonega as well as their literary festival that happens in March. The writers asked about the possibility of the library having virtual meetings as well as in person to keep writing momentum going.” –hosted by Joana Pedrosa-Pastro
Bookmobile Visit to The Orchards at Central Park
“Last week, the Bookmobile visited The Orchards at Central Park for the very first time. This is a 55+ neighborhood and despite the rain, we had 15 visitors. They had a great time talking about their favorite authors and books. One shared that her husband passed away when he was 47, and with tears in her eyes, she said that one of her friends recommended a Nicholas Sparks book that reminded her of their beautiful marriage, so that's one of her favorite authors. Another couple moved to Forsyth two years ago and said the first thing they did after moving was visit the library and get new library cards.” –contributed by Kandy de Martin

Administrations of Lunacy - An Author Talk with Mab Segrest at Sharon Forks Library
"We had a great turnout for our author event with Mab Segrest on her book, Administrations of Lunacy in which she talks about the Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot and Epileptic Asylum, later renamed the Milledgeville State Hospital, and now known as the Central State Hospital. Segrest asked the attendees to introduce themselves and share their connection to the asylum or to psychiatry. Over half of the attendees had a personal connection to both. When asked about the current state of the hospital, Segrest explained that after the closure of the hospital in 2010, the beds were moved from the asylum to the prison. It was a lot of information and I wish we had longer to hear Segrest speak, but I guess I’ll have to read her book to find out more!” –hosted by Jessica Dillard
Paws to Read at Cumming Library
“Today many of the readers came with their siblings to read to Riley and Rosie. There were three little girls who were new and took turns reading to Rosie, and a pair of siblings who were very excited to pet and meet the dogs. One little boy brought his favorite Dinosaur book from home, so he could show the dogs various dinosaurs and explain the different dino types. At the end of the program we were joined by a little girl and her father. She would carefully select her book and then listen to her father read it to her and the dogs. A few patrons came back after previous sessions because the enjoyed reading stories to the dogs so much.” –hosted by Signe Madson
Math Madness at Hampton Park Library
"This was a drop in program for elementary kids in our meeting room. The folks from Mathnasium came and set up math games all around the room. They had lots of teen volunteers helping at each station. Kids came and went from station to station and played the games. After each game, their card got punched, and they were able to get a goody bag once they completed all the games. Several parents commented on how appreciative they were for this program and the kids seemed to enjoy all the games.” –hosted by Kelly Hollis
