We recently heard about a patron having trouble with low-quality scans while using the Document Station at SF. Here are some tips for getting the highest-quality scans.
1) Pick the right format. TIFF seems to work best for black and white scans. PDF and PNG will always be higher quality than JPG.
2) Pick the right color option. Choosing color, even for black and white documents, usually results in a better, though bigger in terms of file size, scan. Choosing the black and white option is often better than choosing the grayscale option if the document has a lot of text.
3) Make sure the page is flat on the glass while scanning and don't be afraid to try scanning again for a better result.
4) Choose the right device. The patron MFDs at CU and HP allow you to choose options for higher dpi (dots per inch) scans. Be aware, the higher dpi the scan, the larger the file size of the scan, and many email providers limit the size of an attachment. The Envisionware Document Stations at PR and SF only have a preset "high" option that does not allow you to get as crisp a scan.
