I am writing to share safety-related information with staff.
This
morning Holly Barfield received a routine notice of activity on the Cumming
Library’s Google business page. A photo had been posted of a child (middle
school age) pointing a toy gun at the camera and wearing a holster belt. The
gun was obviously a toy and the photo was not taken on FCPL property, but Holly
took this post very seriously. Holly worked to get the photo removed and
Denise Leeson notified law enforcement.
By
9:05 AM, the issue was resolved. A sheriff’s deputy located and spoke
with the person who posted the photo. The deputy learned that a mother wished
to post a photo of her child dressed up, but did not want to use her own
address to do so. The photo has been removed, either by Google or the mother.
This
was shocking lack of judgment on her part, but there is a silver lining.
We had an opportunity to see how seriously both the Cumming Police and the
Sheriff’s Department took our concerns. The Cumming Police visited the
Cumming Library in person and the Sheriff’s Office contacted Denise multiple
times to touch base and provide updates.
Although
this situation posed no threat to staff, it serves as a reminder for us to all
be aware of our environment and to call 911 if we have safety concerns.
