Audiovisual Deaccession

Along with selecting, ordering, processing, and cataloging all the new books and Interlibrary Loans, Materials Department staff have been busy weeding and re-assigning some of the physical audiovisual collections.

We recently said goodbye to our adult and juvenile music collections. It is the end of an era. 

We recently removed about 600 juvenile DVDs from Post Road Library and a significant amount of juvenile DVDs from Cumming Library. We were planning to remove the Easy Read-Alongs with a physical CD, including the Easy Language Learning titles, in early 2026, but we decided to go ahead and remove this collection to further allow the branches shelving space for print books.

We will still have Easy Read-Alongs, but only as the books with embedded audio readers (aka Vox books). “Vox” is the current product we purchase, but they are not the only embedded audio reader product, so please continue to refer to these books as Easy Read-Alongs with branch signage or promotional materials. Fun Fact: we used to buy the Vox books directly from the vendor. However, last year they made a distribution deal with Baker & Taylor and we began to order Vox books through B&T. You see where this is leading… Well, we are back to ordering Vox books directly from the vendor, Library Ideas. We just placed a very large order so branches should be getting new Vox books soon!

Where do we go from here? Branch supervisors, Ann, and I are discussing plans and hope to have a viable updated audiovisual deaccession proposal soon.
