Celebrating Black History Month

Throughout February, FCPL will be celebrating Black History Month with a series of programs for adults. This year we chose to focus the series on Black culture and were able to put together a great lineup of programs which will include live jazz music, dancing, storytelling, and more. I hope you'll join us for one or more of these excellent programs!

What: The Origins of the Black Family in America 
Where: Post Road
When: Thursday, February 03 2022, 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Join us as Dr. Gnimbin Ouattara presents his talk about the historical and cultural implications that have led to how the black family exists in America today.  

What: Storytelling and Oral History in Black Culture 
Where: Sharon Forks
When: Saturday, February 05 2022, 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Join professional storyteller, Josie Bailey, to learn about storytelling and oral history in Black culture. Josie will share traditional stories, stories of important Black figures in history, and discuss the importance and history of storytelling in the Black community. 

What: The Poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks: Race and American Culture
Where: Hampton Park
When: Sunday, February 06 2022, 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Gwendolyn Brooks is the first Black writer to win a Pulitzer Prize. Ian Afflerbach of UNG will examine how she captured the African American experience of urban space during "The Great Migration." 

What: An Afternoon of Jazz with Dwan Bosman

Hear professional musician Dwan Bosman share the jazz that inspired his own musical journey.  

What: Dance and Belonging: Atlanta's Chicago Steppin Community
Where: Cumming

Take a step into the steppin world! Celebrate Black History Month at the Cumming Library with Dr. Anjulet Tucker as she discusses Atlanta's very own Chicago steppin community.
