Marathi is a language spoken by 84,000,000 people as their native language. Marathi is a language originating in India, and is the official language of the Indian state of Maharashtra. The large metropolis of Mumbai is part of the state of Maharashtra.
Marathi titles were added to the Library's collect in late spring of 2020. The decision to add Marathi was based upon increasing requests from patrons, as well as responses for Marathi language titles on a survey sent out to patrons. Korean titles were added to the collection at the same time for similar reasons.
Marathi materials are collected at the adult level. These titles are based at the Sharon Forks Library in the World Languages section.
Circulation of Marathi titles has increased since the collection was launched. Checkouts rates for Marathi are now equal to or greater than those for adult Tamil and adult Telugu month to month. During fiscal year 2023 we hope to expand the size of the Marathi collection to continue to provide these materials to those in our community who are interested.
I had a family just last week new to the area and getting a library card, and the mom asked in particular about Marathi books. I was delighted to be able to show her how to find them in the catalog and she was impressed and excited that we had them!
