Here are a handful of recaps from some great programs that took place across the branches between May 29–June 5.
Magic Workshop for Teens with Arthur Atsma at Hampton Park Library
"Arthur Atsma left every patron in attendance speechless with his dazzling array of close-up, sleight-of-hand magic tricks! Arthur’s performance, featuring card tricks, coin tricks, object permutations, and mentalism, was absolutely phenomenal, showcasing incredible skill and engaging our patrons in an unforgettable experience. By the end of the workshop, a rather shy group of teens was transformed, as many eagerly engaged and curiously asked questions. For a grand finale, Arthur had a teen write his name on a dollar bill, placed the bill underneath a clear glass, and somehow made the bill appear inside an unopened orange right before our eyes. No one, including myself, could figure out how he did it!’" –hosted by Chase Truran

Palette Knife Painting with Lara MacLean at Post Road Library
“Patrons started arriving for this program around 1:30 p.m. and by 2 p.m. all the tickets were gone. Lara began by talking about the materials used and then about the palette knife painting technique. Each participant picked out a design and got to work. Since everyone was learning a new skill, they were very intent on their work. When they did look up, though, many offered compliments to their fellow artists. The finished projects looked amazing and people were happy to learn something new.” –hosted by Joana Pedrosa-Pastro

Preschool Music Jam with Gail Barnett at Sharon Forks Library
"Miss Gail was so much fun! We had excited preschoolers gathering about 20 minutes before the program and anticipation just grew until we opened the doors! Some of our patrons have followed Miss Gail and knew they were in for a great time! She did an amazing job of keeping over 100 preschoolers completely tuned in, dancing, clapping, and smiling! She sang some classics, like ‘Old MacDonald’ and the ‘Wheels on the Bus’, to get the group focused and then shared many originals. The kids got to use shakers and scarves during the program and our VolunTeens were a HUGE help in handing things out and collecting! They also used Miss Gail's stamps at the end of the program, which the kids loved! I think our families with littles really loved having a special program that was just for them and I would say Miss Gail would be a crowd pleaser several times a year! We had counted out 200 tickets and I think that is the magic number for this program at SF, everyone needed some space to dance and jump!.” –hosted by Stephanie Gardner

Lew-E the Clown at Cumming Library
“Lew-e, as always, was marvelous, upbeat, fun and amazing! He told me to open the doors 15 minutes ahead of schedule and he entertained us for an impromptu pre-show. He ended up performing almost an hour of fun entertainment for the kids. He continually incorporated reading and the library in his performance. At one point, he borrowed a lanyard full of buttons and explained the basics of our summer reading program! Noteworthy to me also was the reaction of one of my VolunTEENs. We were both standing by the doorway, and she told me that she had never seen a clown perform before. Her face lit up with glee as she watched Lew-e's performance.” –hosted by Julie Boyd
Bookmobile Stops at St. Douglas Villas and Ridgeview Manor
“Christine and I enjoyed our time on the bookmobile on Tuesday. I was so happy to be on the bookmobile and hang out with our people . We had two new library cards at St. Douglas Villas: one for Lizzy (Senior services) and one for Angel, a young man who arrived from Mexico on May 18th and is starting a new life in the U.S. With the authorization from his aunt he checked out an ESL kit and a Chromebook. They also checked out a pass for the Chattahoochee Nature Center. One of our sweet, young patrons was thrilled to have her dad check out the Center for Puppetry Arts pass today. Our last stop of the day was at Ridgeview Manor. We had many of our regular patrons and I met Ms. Regina and his two little sons. They enjoyed playing with the puzzles.
