Good
afternoon everybody!
We’re
beginning our third week of Summer Reading Fun, and thus far we have the
following numbers of participants registered in Beanstack:
Adult – 514
Elementary – 1,396
Preschool – 300
Teen – 597
Staff – 17
Total – 2,824
Comparing Summer Reading Fun 2020 and 2019, at this time last year we had roughly 60 percent more participants enrolled.
Almost 30 elementary aged children joined Young Rembrandts for virtual fun this past Saturday. A drawing program for young people, Young Rembrandts’ curriculum is designed to engage both sides of the brain, resulting in the full development of the mind. By breaking down drawings into their simplest shapes, every child can successfully draw. Karah Meeks led the workshops in which participants drew a French bulldog clad in a superhero outfit complete with cape. Once participants were finished drawing, Karah then demonstrated marker technique and how to add the perfect finishing touches. Participants asked lots of great questions throughout and enjoyed sharing fun facts about their individual drawings.
Earlier last week, storyteller Barry Stewart Mann delighted attendees with his program Dragons, Kings, and Wild, Wild Things, and comic book expert Kyle Puttkammer shared his knowledge in two great presentations. In his first program, Kyle spoke with adults about comic book collecting (condition and understanding the rating system) and history. He then shared his wealth of knowledge with teens where he focused more on developing story and art, as well as the many roles involved in producing a comic book. And as a special Friday treat, families had the opportunity to rock out with wonderful children’s musician Mr. Michael and his son Emet via Facebook Live. Mr. Michael and Emet performed a number of FCPL favorites, including Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons.
In addition to FCPL’s fantastic ongoing in-house programs, in the week ahead, we look forward to welcoming amazing animals from Wildlife Wonders on Wednesday, June 17th at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Saturday, June 20th at 10 a.m., as well as Barry Stewart Mann for a special teen story/writing workshop on Thursday, June 18th at 6:30 p.m.
Until next time, I hope everybody has a great week!
