The vegetable garden at Hampton Park is going strong! Seedlings started under grow lights indoors this
spring highlighted our Seed Library, and we enjoyed seeing the excited faces of
patrons who eagerly took home some seeds of their own to try. These seedlings have flourished outside, and
we have been enjoying fresh vegetables every week and nearly every day! The peas are cooler weather veggies and are
spent now. The radishes and green onions are nearly done,
but the squash and zucchini are in full production mode. We recently harvested our first cucumber and cherry
tomatoes and look forward to the next few months when we will hopefully be able
to try the carrots, peppers, and okra.
You can grow a lot more in 8 raised beds than you think!
There is a Vegetable Garden Planner next to our Seed Library
that walks patrons through the process of planning a vegetable garden and
provides them with resources to plan their own. The binder has all of the
components used to plan the HP garden, including a Garden Map, a prep
checklist, a vegetable planting chart, and a Planting Calendar with the
schedule for the specific vegetables we planted this spring. Also included in
this binder is a Garden Journal where I have described the process, conditions,
and successes and failures in the garden and their possible contributors. A
Garden Journal can be used to reflect back and help plan next year’s garden.
Hopefully this resource is informative for our patrons who are just starting
out with gardening!
