Plan for reopening library buildings

Note: The information in this blog post is preliminary and is intended for staff only.  Please do not share this information with the public.  We will announce reopening plans to the public once they are finalized.

We are tentatively planning to reopen the libraries on June 15^th.  We will not immediately return to all pre-COVID services.  The main services offered will be computer use and browsing (and checking out) materials.  (This combines Phases 3 & 4 described previously.)  We will continue curbside services and virtual programs during this next phase.

Other details (again, not final) of this phase include:

·       The number of patrons in each building at the same time will be limited to help facilitate social distancing.  We expect to allow approximately 30 patrons at CU, HP, and PR and 50 patrons at SF to start with, although that number could change as we are able to determine how patrons spread out through the buildings.  Staff at each building may use their judgment to determine the exact number of patrons at any given time, depending on current circumstances. 

·       Patrons will be asked to limit their time in the libraries to 30 minutes.  Exceptions may be made for patrons who need additional computer time.

·       Hours of service have not been determined, but we expect that service hours will be fewer than pre-COVID19 hours and that curbside services and in-branch services will not overlap.

·       Returned materials will continue to be quarantined.

·       Staff will wear masks; gloves will be worn as needed.

·       Patrons will be encouraged to wear masks; masks may be required for computer assistance.  Masks will be available to provide to patrons as needed or requested.

·       Computers for public use will be at least 6 feet apart. Keyboards will be available at service desks and will be cleaned between patrons.

·       PC Reservation software will be used to limit or extend patron computer use.

·       Furniture will be moved, rearranged, or otherwise made inaccessible to discourage lingering and gathering and to encourage social distancing.

·       Plexiglas barriers will be installed on service desks.

·       One-way and other directional signage will be used in high-traffic and tight areas.

·       Programs will be virtual only; there will be no in-person programming.

·       There will be no public use of meeting rooms or conference rooms.

·       Other rooms (e.g., Hot Spots, study rooms, quiet rooms) may be unavailable due to furniture storage, staff use, or social distancing/sanitizing concerns.  This may vary by location. 

Administrative and supervisory staff are placing a priority on staff and patron safety as we plan for reopening.  Reopening the buildings is an important step in restoring library services in Forsyth County.  We are taking slow, incremental steps to ensure that safety precautions are in place.  As always, if you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your supervisor, HR, or me.
